GRANDEUR on the WATERFRONT
Maggie, the beloved Bishon, stands guard near the front door of this gracious, lakefront home just completed last spring in Porto Cima. The homeowners, who have asked to remain anonymous, began the project in 2006. The home was finished in April 2009. This is the third home the couple has owned at the Lake. The first was located at XX and the second XX. All three were built by Thomas Construction Co.
The couple built this home because they wanted more space.
“We wanted it big enough for the family to be here all at once,” the homeowners said.
The family consists of four sons and one daughter, and five grandsons and four granddaughters. The homeowners, who are “mostly” retired, live part time in Jefferson City and go to Palm Springs, CA, for three months each winter.
The architecture of the home has definite Italian-villa overtones. The exterior is made of natural rock and Dryvit stucco, and the roof is Mexican clay tiles.
The large glass and bronze door beckons guests inside. Standing in the foyer, one has a clear view of the Lake through the large windows in the living room. The floor is porcelain but simulates limestone. Placed over the tiles are Oriental rugs. The ornate 18-light French chandelier features gilded leaves and large crystals.

The living room has an 18-foot ceiling. The four white upholstered chairs swivel so that each person occupying them can see every angle of the main area.
Daylight spills into the cherry-paneled office through three floor-to-ceiling Gothic windows. Directly off the living room, the office features a massive mahogany desk in the French Empire style. There is also a curio cabinet of the same period filled with bronze statuary.
The dining room is resplendent with a silver-gilded table with eight Louis the 16th chairs with inset Italian damask on linen done in shades of pink and cranberry. A magnificent 36-light crystal chandelier hangs above the table. The matching credenza features a XX marble top. Atop a pedestal in one corner is an Italian sculpture of the Nativity.
The bar and butler’s pantry features white marble counters and lighted custom cherry cabinets.
The curved wall leading to the kitchen features a stunning divider done in tiny pearlized tiles. The kitchen features a breakfast bar with mocha-speckled granite topping custom glazed cabinets and four grazed crystal pendants resembling acorns. The work island with contrasting black granite features two deep sinks. There is an octagonal casual dining area with custom coffered birch ceiling. The seven-foot round table has eight upholstered high back chairs.
Off the kitchen is the family room whose focal point is the fireplace set in marble and custom-cherry paneling. Above the mantel is a 52-inch flat screen television, one of 17 placed throughout the house and patio. On either side of the fireplace are two custom made window seats.
The octagon sunroom opens off the family room. The large, arched windows bring the outdoors inside. The room has a fireplace, television and features a tongue-and-groove pine ceiling.
The powder room has a stunning Venetian glass mirror which hangs over an antique XXXX with silver-plated faucets. The walls are covered with XX damask.
The large master bedroom suite is done in a palette of gold and muted shades of brown and beige. The double crown molding is painted antique white and the walls are covered with gold damask. One wall holds custom-made cabinets and a fireplace surrounded by fire granite and framed scrolled columns. There is a sitting alcove flanked by arched windows. The master bath is a masterpiece of mirrors and custom-made cabinetry with fluted columns. The shower, which is computerized, has ceramic tile and decorative gold medallions.
There is a back hallway with a circular staircase that leads up to the grandboys’ bedroom. The bedroom holds four twin beds and the coffered ceiling is knotty pine. At the entrance to the room are two woven leather benches that open for extra storage.
The grandgirls’ room has a Cape Cod feeling with the antique white shutters that match the dresser and headboards of the twin beds.
The third bedroom on the upper level belongs to the homeowner’s only daughter.
“She wanted green, so that’s what we did,” her mother said.
There is a large wardrobe spanning one wall in the room. The walls are sage green, and on the wall beside the king bed is a shadow box displaying the daughter’s First Holy Communion dress and veil.
There is a cherry-paneled elevator in the home which makes going up and down the three levels much easier.
The lower level has four additional bedroom suites — one for each of the homeowners’ sons. The first is done in burgundy and golds. There is a fireplace with custom cabinets,
textured walls and tapestry flanking the bed. The bathroom features a jetted tub with bronze fixtures.
Another suite, which also features a fireplace, is done in browns and grays. The bath features metallic tile.
Because two of the sons have very young children, each of the other two suites, both done in different palettes of browns and taupes with black accents, has a crib and toddler bed.
The main focus of the lower level is the family game room. There is game table made of burl wood with English-style brown leather club chairs. The wine cellar has rock walls and Old World tile floor. The temperature-controlled vault contains about 1,100 bottles of wine.
The large English pub-style bar is paneled in cherry wood. Next to the bar is a large walk-in beverage center. There are two seating areas in the room, one facing the fireplace and the other positioned as a conversation grouping. The highlight of the space is the number of televisions strategically placed around the room. There are two behind the bar and three flanking the fireplace. The sixth flat screen television is not apparent at first glance. But with a push of a button it rises from the credenza where it has been stowed. “We can watch football on every channel,” the homeowner said.
At the back of the lower level is a full bathroom the family uses as the changing room as it opens to the pool and lakeside of the home.
Once outside there is a sports pool with a kiddie play area at one end. There are lighted fountains on one side with a colorwheel that changes to different shades. The hot tub features an outdoor television.
Down a few steps is the outdoor kitchen with stainless appliances — everything from smoker and grill to a dishwasher and icemaker. Next to the kitchen is a covered eating area with a natural cedar ceiling. Hanging from the ceiling is long, rubberize tubing which, when turned on, blows a mist of cool water into the space.
“This is where we hang out the most,” the homeowner said.
There is a rock wall spanning the side of the home and the highlight of the yard is the waterfall that cascades down the entire length of the lot ending at the sand beach by the Lake. There are bronze sculptures in various locations throughout the yard and pathways made of stamped concrete. There is a kennel area for the three Labrador Retrievers, two black and one yellow that visit when the homeowners’ children stay.
The three-well dock houses the family’s cabin cruiser, deck boat and two wave runners.
The home has a pair of two-car garages which flank the driveway. The homeowner converted one of the bays into a game room where he can play golf on 100 courses. The
floor is covered with emerald green outdoor carpeting and there is a padded curtain hung at one end. The course is projected on the curtain. He also has a target game using
an infrared light from a rifle.
In another bay, the homeowner proudly displays his 1946 Jeep which he bought in 1967 and just recently had restored to its original state.
